TSUBA IDENTIFICATION GUIDE

The basis of this chart was first published in the article "Identification of Unsigned Tsuba" by Robert Burawoy in the Bulletin of the Association Franco-Japonaise, No. 15, January 1987. C.U. Guido Schiller has amended and made corrections to the original chart. It is used here with his permission. The chart serves as a basic guide for the identification of some of the major schools of tsuba makers. Thanks to both Mr. Burawoy and Schiller for providing a valuable aid to students and collectors of tsuba.
